Zinedine Zidane

Glasgow, 15 May 2002, the forty-fifth minute of a Champions League final. Roberto Carlos looped a hopeless ball into the sky from the left touchline, thirty metres out and dropping awkwardly behind the play. Zinedine Zidane adjusted, waited for it to fall to shoulder height, and struck it left-footed on the volley into the top corner — with his weaker foot, in a final, from an angle that offered nothing. Four years later, in another final, he put his head into an opponent's chest and walked past the World Cup trophy on his way off the pitch. Both moments are him. Neither explains the other, and any account that tries to reconcile them is missing the point. Born in Marseille in 1972 to Algerian parents from Kabylia and raised in the northern housing estates of La Castellane, Zidane was the aesthetic centre of European football for a decade. At 1.85m he was unusually large for a player of his delicacy, and his game was built on that contradiction: broad shoulders and a low centre of gravity that let him absorb heavy pressure and shield the ball, combined with a first touch that oriented him out of trouble before the trouble arrived. His roulette, executed at full speed with the ball never leaving his feet, became the most imitated move of his generation. He emerged at Cannes and Bordeaux, then joined Juventus in 1996, winning two Serie A titles and reaching two Champions League finals. Real Madrid bought him in 2001 for a world-record fee, and he won La Liga in 2003 and the 2002 Champions League with the goal in Glasgow. For France, across 108 caps, he scored twice in the 1998 World Cup final, won Euro 2000, and dragged a mediocre 2006 side to the final almost alone at thirty-four. He collected the 1998 Ballon d'Or and was three times FIFA World Player of the Year. The liabilities were as clear as the gifts. Zidane was prone to long stretches of walking, drifting entirely out of matches for twenty minutes at a time, and offered essentially no defensive tracking or counter-pressing; teams carried him structurally in exchange for what he produced. He lacked genuine top-end speed over distance and relied on technique rather than athleticism to escape. His goal output was modest for a player operating so close to the box, and in matches where opponents denied him time and refused to engage him one-against-one, he could pass ninety minutes without decisive influence. His first season in Madrid and his final years there were marked by inconsistency that the highlight reels obscure. Beneath the quiet, introverted demeanour lived a volatile, fiercely prideful psyche. Zidane spoke rarely, gave almost nothing to the press, and carried himself with a stillness that read as serenity — until it did not. He accumulated fourteen red cards, and the pattern in them is consistent rather than random: he absorbed provocation and physical treatment for long periods without visible response, and then retaliated in a single sudden act, usually away from the ball, at a dead-ball moment, and almost always with his head or an elbow rather than a tackle. The stamp on Faouzi Rouis, the headbutt on Jochen Kientz in 2000, the strike on Marco Materazzi in Berlin: all delayed, all deliberate, all conducted with an unsettling calm rather than in temper. He never fully explained any of them and never simulated a foul or a grievance to obtain an advantage. Away from the confrontation he was gentle and self-contained: devoted to his family, uncomfortable with celebrity, protective of his origins and of the Algerian and Marseille identity that French politics kept trying to make into a symbol, and largely silent on subjects other players would have exploited. Teammates described a leader by presence and technical authority who almost never raised his voice. Sublime, remote and permanently one insult away from ruin, Zidane produced the most beautiful football of his generation while carrying something the sport was never able to civilise.
