Argentina - Forward Messi, Lionel
I don’t know whether Messi was stronger or greater than Maradona or Pelé, and honestly it doesn’t matter that much to me. What I do know is that in a modern era where players are scrutinized under a microscope, endlessly replayed on the internet and social media, where a single mistake can be shown over and over and mark a player for life, Messi was simply an alien, almost an anomaly. He did not have Pelé’s overwhelming athleticism and all-around completeness, nor Maradona’s charisma and raw flair, yet Leo was something else entirely. A pure, innate, and precocious talent, he established himself at the highest level very early in a top team, playing a vertical, instinctive, and fearless brand of football. Even before his game fully matured, his extraordinary ability was already evident, just ask Juventus. Messi dribbled past opponents with disarming ease, more through sudden changes of pace and perfect timing than through elaborate tricks; he simply did not need them. His football was direct, spectacular yet without excess, always aimed at a clear purpose. A close friend of mine once said that Messi’s football resembled Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do in spirit, free from unnecessary formalism and empty aesthetics, but technically pragmatic, direct, and ultimately more effective than flashy. There is so much that could be said about Messi, yet little that has not already been said. Right winger, left winger, false nine, and even a deep-lying playmaker of the highest level, whatever role he played, he was always the best or among the very best. To those who claim he grew and developed in a team full of superstars, the answer is simple: such an environment brings immense pressure for anyone, and if you are consistently the best even alongside players like Ronaldinho, Eto’o, Henry, Villa, Neymar, Iniesta, and Xavi, there must be a reason. For over a decade, Messi was both the leading scorer and the primary playmaker of that Barcelona side. He produced video game-like seasons with absurd numbers of goals, was uncatchable for anyone, decided entire matches almost on his own, touched countless balls, and as he grew older evolved into a pure playmaker of the highest level, with nothing to envy, indeed often surpassing, the great names of the game. Simply Leo.
