Tarcisio Burgnich

Tarcisio Burgnich belonged to the defensive culture where a duel was not an episode, but a contract. Strong, concentrated and tactically ruthless, he could play as a right back or centre back, becoming one of the great markers of Italian football. At Inter under Helenio Herrera, his role inside the Grande Inter machine required discipline, timing and absolute seriousness: defend the channel, close the man, protect the area and never lose emotional control when the match became hostile. He was not a graceful builder from the back, nor an attacking full back in the modern sense, but his tackling, positional sense, aerial strength and one on one defending were elite for the era. With Italy, he won Euro 1968 and scored in the 1970 World Cup final against Brazil, an unusual attacking footnote for a defender defined by restraint. Burgnich was iron with tactical education, a defender who made opponents feel the match physically and mentally.
