Player Traits
Player ProfileRonaldo, Luís Nazário
Luís Nazário Ronaldo, for those who had the fortune to witness him, was one of the very few players capable of uniting everyone, critics and admirers alike.
Ronaldo was seen as an alien on a football pitch, combining cyborg-like athleticism with pure Brazilian technique. Lightning stepovers, explosive bursts, unpredictable changes of direction, no defender could cope with him, not even the very best of his era.
He was simply from another planet. His style of play, however, came at a heavy cost: his knees gave way, more than once, forcing him into long absences and eventually leading him to adapt his game. The Ronaldo seen at Barcelona and Inter was an absolute phenomenon, perhaps the greatest pure soloist in football history. The moment he received the ball in midfield and surged toward goal, he was almost impossible to stop, with incredible dribbling, supersonic speed, astonishing changes of direction, and sheer imagination. The post-injury Ronaldo remained a player of the highest level, less dynamic and physically dominant, but more clinical, more of a finisher, and even more efficient. Anyone who played with or against him speaks of him as the best striker they have ever seen, and there must be a reason for that. With the national team he came close to a World Cup in 1998 and then won it as a leading figure in 2002. Ronaldo defined an era, becoming a true icon through his look, his hairstyles, his signature moves, and even his Nike commercials. He truly left his mark on a generation.
