There was nothing soft about Jan Wouters, and opponents usually discovered that before the first polite exchange of passes. A fierce Dutch midfielder with the brain of a tactical organiser and the temperament of a street fight, he gave Ajax, Bayern Munich, PSV and the Netherlands aggression, structure and ruthless competitive clarity. He could break play, protect more creative teammates, pass forward with purpose and manage the emotional temperature of midfield, sometimes by raising it to deeply uncomfortable levels. In the Euro 1988 side, his work was vital because Dutch elegance needed someone to put locks on the doors. He was not a silky playmaker, but reducing him to a destroyer would be lazy. Wouters was a hard, intelligent midfield commander, all timing, bite and cold practical value.
