Belgium - Defensive Midfielder Vandereycken, René
René Vandereycken played midfield with a hard edge and a clear tactical brain. He was not built to charm the match with decorative touches, but to control its friction: close marking, positional fouls when needed, simple passing, duels, tempo disruption and protection of central zones. Club Brugge gave him major domestic and European exposure in the late 1970s, while Anderlecht later added another important Belgian chapter to his career. With the national team, he belonged to Belgium’s excellent early 1980s side, scoring the penalty in the Euro 1980 final against West Germany, even though the match ended in defeat. Vandereycken could organise, compete and slow opponents down, sometimes with more severity than grace. He was a defensive midfielder of authority and calculation, the kind of player who made creative football possible by doing the uncomfortable work around it.
