Belgium - Defensive MidfielderStaelens, Lorenzo
Lorenzo Staelens was difficult to reduce to one line on a team sheet, which is part of what made him so valuable. Tall, strong and technically secure, he could play as a centre back, sweeper or defensive midfielder, giving coaches a player able to defend aerially, step into midfield and organise possession from deeper areas. Club Brugge was the main platform for his authority, although his later move to Anderlecht confirmed his status inside Belgian football rather than tying him to one single environment. Staelens was not a quick recovery defender in the modern sense, and space behind him could be a problem if the structure became stretched. His qualities were different: reading, strength, set piece threat, leadership and clean forward passing. For Belgium in the 1990s, he offered experience and tactical elasticity, a defender midfielder hybrid with genuine command.
