Netherlands - Left Winger Keizer, Piet
Piet Keizer was not the kind of winger who simply ran down the line and crossed because the job description said so. He played from the left with velvet control, strange rhythm and a beautifully deceptive body language, drifting inside when the game invited him and slowing defenders down before cutting past them. In Ajax’s great European side, Cruyff was the obvious sun, but Keizer was not background light: he brought imagination, balance, passing quality and a left foot capable of turning a wide position into a creative command post. He was elegant rather than explosive, subtle rather than brutal, but his influence on Ajax’s attacking identity was immense. For the Netherlands, his story was complicated by competition, personality and timing, yet his class was never in doubt. A winger with the brain of a playmaker and the touch of an artist who knew exactly when to break the painting.
