Rafael Martín Vázquez had the elegance of a classic Spanish creator and the slightly cruel problem of belonging to a Real Madrid generation full of giants. Part of the famous Quinta del Buitre, he was a refined attacking midfielder with soft technique, excellent vision and a natural feel for spaces between midfield and attack. He could carry the ball, combine quickly and give rhythm to possession without needing to force every play into drama. At his best, he looked like a number 10 with tactical education, graceful and intelligent rather than explosive. The issue was continuity: his talent was obvious, but his career never quite became as dominant or decisive as his technical ceiling suggested. A classy midfielder, elegant, cerebral and slightly unfinished, the kind whose football looked better than his historical ranking.
