Italy - Sweeper Salvadore, Sandro
A defence with Sandro Salvadore in it usually gained more than muscle. It gained judgement. Left footed, elegant and tactically mature, he could play as a centre back or sweeper, combining strong positional sense with composed use of the ball from the back. Milan introduced him at elite level, but Juventus became the main stage of his authority, with captaincy, league titles and a reputation as one of Italy’s most intelligent defenders of the 1960s. Salvadore was not the most aggressive man marker in the Burgnich mould, nor a libero of constant attacking adventure. His qualities were subtler: reading the first pass, covering the correct shoulder, choosing when to clear and when to build, keeping the defensive line emotionally stable. For Italy, his story was complicated by moments of misfortune, but at club level his class was clear. A defender of balance, leadership and left footed composure.
