Born in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, near Barcelona, in 1982, Valdés joined Barça's youth academy as a boy, left briefly when his family moved to Tenerife, and returned to work his way back up through the ranks before making his first-team debut in 2002. He became first-choice goalkeeper the following season and remained it for twelve consecutive years, redefining what the position could offer a possession-based team: exceptional with his feet as much as his hands, comfortable acting as an auxiliary sweeper well outside his own box, and central to the tiki-taka system that Pep Guardiola built around him from 2008. Temperamentally he combined genuine excellence and consistency across a full decade with real vulnerability once his career's foundations became unstable. He described the pressure of being Barcelona's first-choice goalkeeper for ten uninterrupted years as something that had genuinely worn him down by the time he chose to leave, a rare and direct acknowledgment from an elite athlete that sustained top-level performance carries a psychological cost as well as a physical one. During his isolated period at Manchester United he spoke openly about fear and loneliness, and was, by his own account, close to giving up football altogether before a young academy coach, Alan Fettis, helped him hold on — a debt he later thanked Fettis for publicly and by name. Despite the professional rupture with Van Gaal, he continued to describe the manager warmly, almost as a father figure, crediting him with two separate chances at the highest level of the sport rather than dwelling on how their relationship at United had ended. His post-playing life continued to be turbulent: he was dismissed from a Barcelona youth coaching role after only a few months, before later working in a political capacity connected to Joan Laporta's presidential campaign at the club.
