Netherlands - GoalkeeperStuy, Heinz
Keeping goal for Ajax in the early seventies was not exactly a quiet administrative job. Behind a team that pushed high, rotated constantly and treated possession like a philosophical system, Heinz Stuy had to offer concentration, nerve and simplicity. He was not a spectacular goalkeeper built for acrobatic mythology, but his calm presence suited that side: clean handling, good positioning, courage when space opened behind the defence and enough composure to avoid disrupting the team’s rhythm. Three consecutive European Cups say plenty, even if history usually spends its flowers on Cruyff, Neeskens and the outfield revolutionaries. Stuy’s role was more silent than glamorous, but silence can be valuable when the rest of the team is rewriting football grammar. A steady goalkeeper, less iconic than the shirt around him, but essential to the machine.
