Italy - Sweeper Picchi, Armando
Inter’s defensive system did not simply place Armando Picchi behind the markers; it gave him command of the whole last line. As libero in Helenio Herrera’s Grande Inter, he read the match from a few metres deeper, covering Burgnich, Guarneri and Facchetti, correcting distances and turning defensive security into controlled counterattack. Picchi was not the tallest or most physically imposing defender, and he was not a modern build up centre back in the later Beckenbauer sense. His genius was positional: anticipation, covering angles, timing of interventions, vocal organisation and the nerve to stay cold while the match around him became violent and compressed. European Cups in 1964 and 1965 made his role historically central, because catenaccio at that level required not only markers, but a brain behind them. Picchi was the safety mechanism and the tactical eye, a libero whose authority came from reading football faster than others ran it.
