Viktor Matviyenko

On the left side of Dynamo Kyiv’s 1970s defence, Matviyenko provided the kind of balance that rarely looks glamorous but makes an elite system breathe properly. He could defend wide spaces, support circulation with simple passing and choose his forward runs without breaking the team’s rest defence. His place in the 1975 European-winning side came from tactical reliability, endurance and a full-back’s instinct for collective timing.
