A dynamic Soviet left-back, Evgeny Lovchev was one of the most modern wide defenders in Eastern European football during the early 1970s. Fast, proactive and technically secure, he could defend with aggression, step into midfield and support attacks with a confidence that was still unusual for full-backs of his era. At Spartak Moscow, he became a major figure, winning the Soviet Top League in 1969, the Soviet Cup in 1971 and Soviet Footballer of the Year in 1972. With the USSR, he collected 52 caps and played at the 1970 World Cup, bringing pace, discipline and personality to the flank. He was not a purely defensive marker, nor a reckless attacking tourist, but a complete left-back with stamina, timing and real football intelligence
