Scotland - Centre Midfielder Gemmill, Archie
Archie Gemmill was a midfielder who carried the ball as if he wanted to change the temperature of a match by himself. Small, agile and fiercely competitive, he could drive through central spaces, resist pressure with balance and give Scotland a rare form of midfield acceleration. Derby County under Brian Clough brought the best club context for his intelligence and energy, while Nottingham Forest added European success to a career built on movement, courage and technical sharpness rather than size. His goal against the Netherlands at the 1978 World Cup remains the immortal frame, a slalom of timing, control and nerve, but it should not reduce him to one clip. Gemmill was a genuine central midfielder: tenacious in duels, positive in possession and capable of turning defensive recovery into forward momentum.
