Portugal - GoalkeeperPereira, Alberto da Costa
Benfica's first European dynasty needed Eusébio, Coluna and attacking fire, of course, but it also needed a goalkeeper who did not turn pressure into theatre. Alberto da Costa Pereira was exactly that: tall, sober and mentally strong, more interested in solving danger than decorating it. Between the posts, he gave Béla Guttmann's side reliability, reach and the calm presence required in matches where Benfica defended leads against the very best in Europe. He was not a spectacular acrobat in the modern highlight sense, nor a flamboyant commander looking for attention, but his positioning, concentration and handling made him a secure foundation. The European Cup victories of 1961 and 1962 are the obvious monuments, yet his long service at Benfica gives the career its real shape. Costa Pereira was practical excellence, a goalkeeper of trust, order and serious competitive nerve.
