Lorenzo Buffon

Lorenzo Buffon looked like a goalkeeper from an era when style still mattered, but reducing him to elegance would miss the technical weight of his game. Tall, agile and visually spectacular, he had the spring, reach and reflexes to make difficult saves appear almost choreographed, especially during his finest Milan years in the 1950s. His positioning was generally strong, his handling reliable for the period, and his confidence gave defenders a clear reference behind them. Buffon was not a modern sweeper keeper, of course, and his game belonged to a time when goalkeepers were judged more by shot stopping, aerial command and nerve than by distribution under pressure. With Milan he won multiple league titles, while the national team career placed him in a complicated Italian goalkeeping lineage full of prestige and competition. He was glamorous, yes, but also serious: a classic keeper of reflex, presence and emotional authority.
