There is nothing decorative about Nicolás Otamendi, and that is exactly the point. He is a centre-back of confrontation, timing and competitive nerve, the sort of defender who plays every duel as if someone has questioned his entire family tree. At his best, he combines aggressive front-foot defending with strong aerial presence, sharp anticipation and enough passing quality to survive in possession-heavy teams, especially under Guardiola at Manchester City. He has never been flawless, because that proactive style can expose him when the space behind opens, but his courage and intensity have always been central to his value. With Argentina, his late-career importance grew beautifully, becoming a hard, experienced pillar in the Copa América and World Cup-winning cycle. Not elegant in the classical sense, but fiercely reliable when the game becomes emotional. A defender made of scars, pride and very little diplomatic patience.
