A graceful and highly versatile Spanish midfielder, José Luis Caminero played with the elegance of a creator and the physical reach of a modern box-to-box player. Naturally suited to central midfield, he could also operate as an attacking midfielder, wide midfielder or second striker, always bringing clean technique, intelligent movement and a refined sense of timing in possession. At Atlético Madrid, especially during the 1995-96 double-winning season, he became a key figure: stylish, decisive and tactically flexible without losing personality. He was not a pure playmaker like Valerón, nor a relentless runner in the usual midfield mould, but something more hybrid and elusive. Tall, technical and imaginative, he could carry the ball, arrive between the lines and give the attack a touch of class. A sophisticated midfielder, slightly difficult to label, which is usually where the interesting players live.
