England - Striker Vardy, James
The Premier League had seen fast strikers before, but Jamie Vardy made speed feel like a trap waiting behind every centre back. His rise from non league football to Leicester City’s 2015 to 2016 title was extraordinary, yet the story should not hide the technical detail of his game: curved runs across the shoulder, explosive separation, aggressive pressing, quick finishing and a ruthless understanding of when to attack the space behind a high line. Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester gave him the perfect ecosystem, with compact defending, early forward passes, Mahrez’s service and transitions played at maximum vertical speed. Vardy was not a refined link striker, not dominant in aerial duels and not especially useful when asked to slow attacks down with his back to goal. His elite value came from timing, intensity and punishment. Give him grass, hesitation or a careless defensive line, and he turned one pass into damage.
