Giuliano Sarti

Giuliano Sarti did not need spectacular flights to look like a great goalkeeper. His strength was colder and more valuable: positioning, timing, judgement and the ability to make difficult saves look routine because he had already solved half of the problem before the shot. At Fiorentina first and then with Helenio Herrera’s Grande Inter, he became a master of concrete goalkeeping, pragmatic, reliable and mentally sharp inside teams built on structure and control. He was also more modern than memory often allows, among the Italian keepers who understood distribution and the first pass as part of the role rather than an annoying detail after the save. Not a theatrical number one, not a poster of acrobatics, but an intelligent keeper who gave defenders trust and opponents very little encouragement. Sarti was elegance without noise, one of the most underrated Italian goalkeepers of his era.
