A relentless Croatian right-back and one of the great symbols of Shakhtar Donetsk, Darijo Srna combined stamina, crossing quality and leadership with exceptional competitive consistency. He was not the most elegant full-back in the pure Brazilian sense, but he gave his teams width, intensity, set-piece danger and a captain’s presence every single week, which is already more useful than half the poetry written about football. His right foot was a real weapon, especially on crosses, free kicks and long diagonals, while his mentality made him a reference point for both club and country. Defensively solid, tactically disciplined and physically tireless, he interpreted the role with modern aggression and old-school responsibility. Perhaps limited by spending much of his prime outside Europe’s most visible leagues, but never by quality or character. A complete, durable and fiercely reliable full-back.
