Uruguay - Left Back Mujica, Juan
A left back who could attack, defend and understand midfield spaces was not common in South American football of the early 1970s, and Juan Mujica belonged exactly to that more advanced category. Left footed, mobile and technically comfortable, he gave Nacional width without reducing the role to simple overlapping runs. He could mark, recover, carry the ball forward and deliver with quality, while still showing the competitive hardness expected from an Uruguayan defender. His peak came in a major cycle: Uruguay’s strong 1970 World Cup campaign, then Nacional’s 1971 Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup triumphs, where his flank work added balance to a side full of experience and authority. Mujica was not a superstar full back on the scale of the greatest global names, but he was complete, intelligent and tactically modern. A serious left sided defender, ahead of many contemporaries in how naturally he connected defence, transition and attack.
