Germany - Left Back Dietz, Bernard
Bernard Dietz was a defender with the habits of a leader and the legs of a wide player. Naturally left sided, he could operate as a left back or defensive wide midfielder, combining stamina, tackling and aggressive forward support with a strong sense of responsibility in possession. Duisburg was his home and the club most tied to his identity, but his international reputation belongs above all to West Germany, where he captained the team to the 1980 European Championship title. Dietz was not a glamorous full back in the modern attacking sense, nor a delicate technician who built attacks with constant invention. His value came from reliability, physical endurance, direct running and defensive commitment over ninety minutes. A serious, durable and authoritative player, he gave Germany’s left side balance, leadership and competitive substance.
