Scotland - Defensive Midfielder Lambert, Paul
The clearest proof of Paul Lambert’s quality came in a match where he spent much of the night making someone else quieter. In the 1997 Champions League final, Borussia Dortmund trusted him to help contain Juventus’s central creativity, and his disciplined performance against Zinedine Zidane became part of the tactical story of Dortmund’s victory. Lambert was a central midfielder of restraint, anticipation and positional control, strong at screening spaces, reading passing lanes and moving the ball without unnecessary risk. Celtic later made him a captain and domestic reference, but Germany added an important layer to his profile: continental schooling, tactical precision and comfort inside organised pressing structures. He was not an elegant conductor or a heavy goal threat. Lambert’s value lived in defensive balance, timing and mature decision making, the sort of midfield intelligence that lets a team play with greater confidence around him.
