Mousa Dembélé was one of those midfielders who made pressure look like a theoretical concept. Strong, smooth and almost impossible to knock off the ball, he carried possession through crowded areas with a mixture of balance, body control and quiet arrogance that few central midfielders could match. He was not a prolific scorer, not a classic final-pass creator, and sometimes his game lacked the decisive numbers expected from a player of his talent. But in the middle third, he was extraordinary: receiving under pressure, resisting tackles, progressing the ball and giving his team control through pure technical security. At Tottenham, especially under Mauricio Pochettino, he became the hidden luxury of a fierce, athletic side. A midfielder of power, silk and strange calm, less statistical than spectacular in the most subtle way.
