Fabian Carini

Fabián Carini looked, at first sight, like a goalkeeper designed for a bigger club career than the one he actually produced. Tall, athletic and reactive, he had the frame, reach and shot stopping base that made Juventus invest in him early, while Uruguay saw enough quality to trust him for major tournaments at a young age. His best saves showed quick feet, strong reflexes and good spring, especially on close range efforts and shots across his body. The problem was continuity. At club level, loans, competition for places and uneven spells prevented him from becoming the long term number one his talent suggested. He was not poor with his hands, but his command, rhythm and authority never fully settled at elite level. For Uruguay, Carini remained a serious goalkeeper with international weight. Historically, though, he belongs more to the category of gifted keepers who promised more than they could consistently deliver.
