Tore André Flo looked like a target man, but the label never quite told the whole truth. Tall, graceful and surprisingly smooth with the ball, he gave Norway, Chelsea and Rangers a centre forward who could win aerial duels without becoming predictable and combine with teammates without turning every attack into a wrestling match. His touch was cleaner than his frame suggested, his movement more subtle, and his finishing often calm rather than violent. The famous Norway win over Brazil in 1998 gave the world a perfect glimpse of his value: height, intelligence, confidence and a strange ability to make elite defenders look uncomfortable. He was not a ruthless superstar striker, and sometimes lacked the aggression expected from a forward of his size. Flo was a refined giant, elegant, useful and technically better than many remember.
