Speed alone did not explain Sérgio Conceição. Plenty of wingers were quick; fewer attacked the flank with his mixture of impatience, aggression and tactical repetition. A right sided midfielder who could also play wider or slightly inside, he gave teams direct running, pressing intensity, early crosses and constant pressure on the opposing full back. His Lazio years showed the most explosive version, including a key role in the club’s 1999 to 2000 peak, while Portugal received a fierce competitor capable of changing matches through energy as much as technique. The hat trick against Germany at Euro 2000 remains his most famous international performance, but his career was not built only on that night. He was not a pure fantasy winger, nor a delicate creator between lines. Conceição was vertical football: acceleration, work rate, temper and delivery, always played at a high emotional voltage.
