Scotland - Right Back Boyd, Tom
Tom Boyd’s career was built on defensive usefulness rather than one fixed identity. He could play as a full back, centre back or wing back, switching sides and roles with the kind of tactical reliability that managers value more than spectators usually notice. Chelsea gave him English exposure, but Celtic made him a long term captain and one of the club’s stabilising figures through the 1990s. His game was based on concentration, stamina, tight marking, recovery positioning and clean enough use of the ball to support possession without overcomplicating it. For Scotland, he belonged to a generation that needed defenders comfortable in back fours and back threes, and Boyd’s adaptability made him particularly valuable. He was not an attacking full back of great flair, nor a dominant aerial centre back in the classic mould. He was dependable structure, experience and competitive calm across the defensive line.
