Matías Almeyda played midfield with the intensity of someone trying to put out three fires at once, and usually managing at least two. A fierce Argentine defensive midfielder, he combined pressing, tackling, stamina and emotional charge with better technique than the destroyer label often suggests. At River Plate he was pure competitive energy, while in Serie A, especially with Lazio and Parma, he proved he could survive and shine in one of the most tactically brutal midfield environments of the era. He was not a regista, not a creative director, but he could recover the ball, carry it forward, keep rhythm simple and protect more imaginative teammates from having to do unpleasant manual labour. For Argentina, he brought bite, sacrifice and reliability across a strong generation. A hard, intelligent ball-winner with lungs, pride and absolutely no diplomatic mission in midfield.
