Mustapha Zitouni's career sits at the meeting point of football class and history with sharp edges. A refined central defender, he had the elegance, reading and technical confidence to stand out in French football, becoming an international for France before choosing the FLN team during Algeria's struggle for independence. On the pitch, he was not a crude stopper or a simple destroyer. He read attacks early, used the ball cleanly and carried himself with the authority of a defender who understood both space and responsibility. Monaco saw his quality, France recognised it, and Algeria later made him part of something much larger than a club career. His legacy is therefore double: a high level centre back with real tactical intelligence, and a footballer whose choices gave his name political weight. Zitouni was class, courage and conviction in the same defensive frame.
