Before Manchester City became a global machine, there was a Chinese defender running up and down its right side with stamina, courage and a very practical sense of the game. Sun Jihai could play as a right back, centre back or defensive wide midfielder, and that flexibility explains much of his value: he was not a refined attacking full back, but a tough, mobile and tactically obedient defender who could survive Premier League rhythm through work rate, concentration and physical commitment. His years at City made him one of the most visible Asian players in English football, and his Premier League goal in 2002 gave his career a symbolic weight beyond the numbers. With China, he was part of the 2002 World Cup generation, even if injury ruined his tournament almost immediately. Technically functional rather than elegant, sometimes limited in the final third, but brave, durable and historically important. Sun was not a superstar. He was a pioneer who actually competed.
