Italy - Centre MidfielderDe Sisti, Giancarlo
Before the pass became fashionable as a statistic, Giancarlo De Sisti already treated it as a form of control.
A central midfielder of calm authority, he linked defence and attack through positioning, short combinations and a clear understanding of match tempo. Roma shaped his early identity, Fiorentina made him a Scudetto winning reference in 1968 to 1969, and Italy trusted him in the midfield of the Euro 1968 winning side and the 1970 World Cup run. De Sisti was not a spectacular dribbler or a heavy scoring midfielder, but his value was constant: receive cleanly, choose correctly, protect the team’s shape and move possession into better zones. Mentally, he was cool, ordered and resistant to panic, the type of player who makes complicated matches less noisy. A regista of balance rather than theatre, technically precise and tactically essential.
