Lyon’s dominance in the 2000s had plenty of technique and attacking talent, but Cris gave it the kind of defensive spine that makes winning feel repeatable rather than accidental. Strong, aggressive and excellent in the air, he was a centre back who enjoyed contact, attacked crosses with authority and defended the box as if visitors needed written permission. His nickname, The Policeman, suited him well: direct, commanding, sometimes severe, but rarely passive. He was not a graceful libero or a delicate passer from the back, yet he had enough composure to function in a side that wanted control as well as muscle. With Brazil, he remained on the edge of a brutally competitive generation, which limited his international weight more than his quality. At club level, though, Cris was a serious defender: powerful, reliable and central to one of Lyon’s greatest eras.
