Italy - Right Winger Chiarugi, Luciano
Luciano Chiarugi played as if the left flank were a place for provocation. Quick, technical and emotionally sharp, he was a left winger or wide forward who attacked defenders through dribbling, sudden changes of rhythm and a dangerous left foot rather than through calm tactical repetition. Fiorentina gave him early prominence in the 1968 to 1969 Scudetto side, but Milan placed him in the brightest European frame, especially the 1973 Cup Winners’ Cup final, where his goal decided the match against Leeds United. Chiarugi was not an obedient wide midfielder built mainly for defensive balance, and his personality could be difficult to contain. That volatility was part of the package: acceleration, fouls won, crosses, shots from angles and constant irritation for full backs. He was more spark than system, a gifted attacking winger whose best moments had the electricity of a match suddenly tilting.
