A clinical Egyptian forward, Mahmoud El Khatib was one of African footballs great creative attackers and a true Al Ahly monument. Elegant, intelligent and beautifully balanced, he played between the lines with the instinct of a scorer and the imagination of a number 10, drifting away from markers before striking with sudden precision. He was not a pure centre-forward, nor simply a playmaker, but a refined second striker who could create, combine and finish with equal naturalness. For Al Ahly, he became the symbol of a golden era, leading through talent, personality and decisive performances in major African competitions. His 1983 African Footballer of the Year award confirmed what the continent already knew: El Khatib had class at the highest level.
