Bilardo did not romanticise the game. He investigated it. The Bilardo profile is extreme in defending, tactical focus, discipline and opponent analysis. His Argentina could protect the centre, use man-oriented references, absorb long spells and then release Maradona or the runners around him into decisive spaces. The structure was not built to look generous. It was built to make genius survivable. That is the key: Bilardo did not simply give the ball to Diego and pray.
